U-ENAI features six levels of learning. Each presents unique challenges to students. The levels are strategically stratified to provide a fitting environment for each student¡¯s ability. To appropriately match a student¡¯s learning profile with the proper level or course, a placement examination is given to all students. A multiple choice level exam will be taken by the student, according to study type (Junior or Senior). This measures the student¡¯s proficiency in the following:
1. Capitalization
2. Adherence to the topic
3. Punctuation
4. Spelling
5. Appropriateness of word choice
6. Appropriate use of prepositions / conjunctions / articles
7. Pronoun case consistency
8. Subject-Verb agreement
9. Verb tense consistency
10. Fragments used as sentences
11. Use of variety of sentence types
12. Appropriate use of idioms / figures of speech / colloquialism
13. Appropriate use of comparison / contrast / analogy
14. Appropriate use of transitions
15. Cohesion within paragraphs
16. Discriminating vocabulary level
17. Appropriate sequencing / development of ideas / logic
18. Factual accuracy and effectiveness in carrying the message across
After grading, if the student¡¯s essay has all 18 criteria, the student is placed in the Upper Advanced level. If the student¡¯s essay has the first 15 criteria, the student is placed in the Lower Advanced level. If the student¡¯s essay has the first 12 criteria, the student is placed in the Upper Intermediate level. If the student¡¯s essay has the first 9 criteria, the student is placed in the Lower Intermediate level. If the student¡¯s essay has the first six criteria, the student is placed in the Upper Basic level. If the student¡¯s essay has only the first three criteria, the student is placed in the Lower Basic level.
