Dialog Criteria for Placement
U-ENAI features Twelve (12) levels of learning that each present unique challenges to students. The levels are strategically stratified to provide a fitting environment for each student¡¯s ability. To appropriately match a student¡¯s learning profile with the proper level or course, a placement examination is given to all students. This examination will test the student¡¯s abilities in speaking and listening through conversational written assessment. The examination will composed of questions focused on the following 18 criteria:
1. ability to understand basic vocabulary and distinguish among common confusables.
2. ability to understand sentences with simple structures (S-V-O) and appropriateness of answer.
3. grammatical accuracy: nouns, pronouns, verbs, etc. and ability to reply with appropriate word order.
4. ability to understand and follow instructions and grammatical accuracy: adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions, etc.
5. ability to construct different types of sentences according to function and appropriate use of tenses.
6. correct subject verb agreement and ability to construct different types of sentences according to form.
7. appropriate use of interjections and use of idioms.
8. appropriate colloquialism/usage and use of figures of speech.
9. appropriate use of phrasal verbs and use of jargon.
10. ability to identify main ideas and key themes and recognize the motive of a speaker (for instance, to explain about something, to complain about something, or to agree with someone).
11. ability to understand a speaker¡¯s attitude or opinion about what he or she is saying and understand different relationships among ideas.
12. ability to relate information heard in English to a listener¡¯s previously-known information and synthesize different groups of ideas
13. ability to understand the most important points and categorize details into varying levels of importance.
14. ability to reorganize ideas according to a speaker¡¯s needs or a set of given instructions and speak with a sufficient number of appropriate details.
15. ability to sufficiently elaborate or simplify ideas and effectively influence others according to purpose (for instance, to persuade, to expound, etc.).
16. ability to summarize and speak with a clear arrangement or relationship of ideas.
17. clearness of speech and correct pacing and correct pronunciation and intonation.
18. ability to spontaneously respond and reply appropriately and speak with confidence or without hesitation.
After grading, if the student¡¯s has all 18 criteria, the student is placed in the Senior Upper Advanced level. If the student¡¯s abilities have the 1st 17 criteria, the student is placed in the Senior Lower Advance. If the student¡¯s performance in the exam has the 1st 16 criteria, the student is placed in the Senior Upper Intermediate level. If the student was able to get has the 1st 15 criteria, the student is placed in the Senior Lower Intermediate level. If the student examination result has the 1st 14 criteria, the student is placed in the Senior Upper Basic level. If the student¡¯ exhibits 1st 13 criteria in his exam, the student is placed in the Senior Lower Basic level. With the first 12 criteria is evident the student will be place at Junior Upper advance. While with the 10 criteria, the student will be place in the Junior Lower Advance. With the 8 criteria evident in the exams, the student will be placed Junior Upper Intermediate. When the first 6 criteria is seen, the student falls in the Junior Lower Intermediate. If only the first 4 is detected then, the student goes to Junior Upper Basic. And at least, if only 2 criteria is seen the student finally falls as Junior Lower Basic.
